Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Admission Requirements

Admission application form including 1-page essay, CV, and transcript. Must have completed one of the Certificate courses with a grade of B or higher before applying. Applications will be read by at least two members of the Certificate Committee. Meeting with a Certificate Advisor (a member of the Certificate Committee) to work out schedule.

Required Courses (all in-person)

Students must complete: 

• LING 5090 - Teaching English as a Second Language Credits: 3  
• LING 5101 - ESL Teaching Practicum: Language Credits: 1  
• LING 5102 - ESL Teaching Practicum: Culture Credits: 1  
• LING 5103 - ESL Teaching Practicum: Writing Credits: 1  
• LING 7400 - Structure of English Credits: 3  

Students must complete one additional course with a minimum of 3 credits from:

• ANTH 5480 - Literacy and Orality - Credits: 3   
• ANTH 7541 - Topics in Sociolinguistics Credits: 3   
• ANTH 7541 - Topics in Sociolinguistics - Credits: 3   
• EDIS 5270 - Teaching Reading Writing to ELLs - Credits: 3   
• EDIS 5422 - Cross-Cultural Education for Diverse Learners - Credits: 3   
• EDIS 5423 - English Linguistics - Credits: 3   
• EDIS 5470 - ESL Assessment and Curriculum Design - Credits: 3   
• EDIS 7842 - Teaching ELLs: Theory, Policy & Practice Credits: 3  
• LNGS 5000 - Linguistic Principles in Language Pedagogy - Credits: 3   
• LNGS 7220 - History and Structure of Black English Credits: 3  
• LNGS 7240 - Southern American English Credits: 3  

Students must complete all courses counted toward the Certificate with a grade of B or higher in order to be awarded a Certificate.
